Meaning and origin of Patrick
Patrick comes from Latin patricius, 'patrician', a member of Rome's noble class. Its fame rests on Saint Patrick, the fifth-century Romano-British missionary who became the patron saint of Ireland and whose own writings, the Confessio, survive. Out of reverence the Irish once avoided the name, but from the seventeenth century it became one of the most typical Irish names, carried abroad by emigrants. Saint Patrick's Day on 17 March is celebrated worldwide.
