Meaning and origin of Norma
Norma owes its popularity to Vincenzo Bellini's 1831 opera Norma, whose heroine is a Druid priestess. The librettist Felice Romani may have taken it from the Latin norma, a carpenter's square and so 'rule' or 'standard', but its source is not certain, and some see it as a feminine of Norman. The name spread in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson.
