Meaning and origin of Jafar
A jaʿfar, in the Arabic of the desert poets, is a little stream that runs with fresh water. The name is loved because of Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib, the Prophet's ﷺ cousin, who took a group of early Muslims to safety in Abyssinia. After he died a martyr at Muʾta, he was honoured as al-Ṭayyār, 'the one who flies'. Madinah's great teacher Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq later added to its prestige.
