Meaning and origin of Casimiro

Casimiro is the Spanish and Italian form of the Polish Kazimierz, built from kazić, 'to destroy' or 'to proclaim', and mir, 'peace'. Because the first element can be read either way, the name is explained both as 'peacemaker' and as 'destroyer of peace'. It was borne by several Polish kings, including Casimir III the Great, and by Saint Casimir, a fifteenth-century prince who became patron of Poland and Lithuania.
